ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – A 42-save effort by Greater Sudbury Cubs netminder Jake Marois backstopped his club to a 5-4 victory over the Elliot Lake Red Wings Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Centennial Arena.

The lone marker in the first frame came in the final minute of the period as Nicholas Faught used a teammate on a two-on-one before pulling up and snapping a shot past Elliot Lake starter Nolan Chartrand.

Moving to the middle stanza, an early power play saw the Red Wings tie it as Brock McNaughton collected his first league marker as he stuffed in a loose puck to the left of Marois.

After the visitors went back in front midway through the match-up, courtesy of Billy Biedermann, the Red Wings countered twice in quick succession to go up 3-2 thanks to tallies from Jovani Moses and McNaughton’s second of the evening.

The back and forth affair saw Greater Sudbury answer that as Ben Harris and Pierson Sobush both found the back of the net to make it 4-3 Cubs after 40 minutes.

Cole Ambeault then added some insurance for the visitors at 7:08 of the third with help from Graeme Silen and Mathieu Morin.

The visitors would need that tally as Elliot Lake’s Dayton Clarke clicked on the power play with 15 seconds remaining for his first in the league, in what was the night’s final goal.

Shots on goal finished up 46-27 in favour of the Red Wings with Marois getting the win while Chartrand suffered the setback.
