High-scoring 3rd helps Elliot Lake outlast Espanola

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats scored five times as part of an eight-goal third period to help them outlast the Espanola Express 6-4 Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Regional Recreation Complex.

The match-up was tightly contested through the opening 20 minutes as neither side was able to open the scoring.

An Espanola power play helped them start things off offensively just past the five-minute mark of the second stanza when Aaron Roschinsky picked up his 15th tally of the season.

Elliot Lake countered with the equalizer at 6:56 on an Evan Spencer effort.

It stayed 1-1 until 7:25 of the third when the Wildcats started an outburst of four markers in rapid succession to break it open.

Brett Jacklin and Spencer scored 30 seconds apart to put the visitors up 3-1 while Jacklin and Taylor Woolcott added later efforts to add to the Wildcats’ lead.

The Express then came back with tallies from MacKenzie Aiken and Cameron Anklewich, who struck shorthanded, to pull the home side to within two.

The goal parade continued at 15:52 as Brennan Kelly supplied the eventual game-winner for Elliot Lake with 4:08 to go before Roschinsky’s second of the night and 16th overall rounded out the scoring for Espanola with 180 seconds remaining.

Shots on net in the contest favoured the Wildcats by a 49-46 count with Matt Kostiw picking up the win and Logan Sawka the loss.
