Liarakos provides late heroics as Blind River slips past Elliot Lake in OT

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – Yianni Liarakos tied the game late then provided the game-winner in overtime as the Blind River Beavers rallied for an exciting 2-1 come from behind victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Blind River Community Centre.

Elliot Lake opened the night’s scoring 13:50 into the contest on Ty Hannaford’s seventh goal of the season.

Both goaltenders in the Beavers’ Aidan Doak and Matt Kostiw of the Wildcats saw 26 shots apiece fired their way through two periods in a game that remained 1-0 Elliot Lake heading into the third.

The narrow Wildcats’ margin held up until the late going when Liarakos notched the equalizer with just 31 seconds left in regulation.

Heading into OT, Liarakos was once again the hero for Blind River as he buried the game-winner at 4:45 of the extra session to give the home side the dramatic victory.

Doak finished with 46 saves to pick up the win for the Beavers while Kostiw saw 38 attempts in the setback helping Elliot Lake earn a point.
