NOJHL announces 1st & 2nd all-star teams

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced today their respective first and second all-star teams for the 2014-15 season.

Each all-star squad consists of one goaltender, two defencemen and three forwards (Centre, Left Wing and Right Wing), who garnered accolades for their on-ice efforts during the course of the campaign.

Also earning all-star honours for the first and second teams were a coach, manager and trainer.

NOJHL 1ST ALL-STAR TEAM

GOALTENDER: JOSH ERICKSON, KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – In his first season in the NOJHL, the 20-year-old native of Woodbury, Minn., impressed in all areas for the Gold Miners. … Erickson leads all netminders in the league in wins, goals-against average and save percentage at 22, 2.17 and .924 respectively. … Has two shutouts as well.

DEFENCE: JEREMY PICARD-FISET, KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS — This marks the third straight year Picard-Fiset has been named a NOJHL first team all-star. …  Tops all defencemen in the league in assists with 42. … Is currently second in point among blueliners with 47 and leads in point-per-game average at 0.98.

DEFENCE: ETHAN STRONG, KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – Standout rearguard is one of the key reasons Kirkland Lake has allowed the fewest goals in the league entering the final weekend of the regular season. … Also has 40 points in his first 48 outings in 2014-15. … Leads all D-men in the NOJHL in power play goals with 12. … His PPG total is also second among all skaters in the league. … Was on Team NOJHL at the Central Canada Cup Challenge.

CENTRE: CODY GRATTON, COCHRANE CRUNCH – Paces all players in the NOJHL in goals with 52. … Tied for second overall in points with 87. …Knotted for first in point-per-game average at 1.98. …His 11 shorthanded and game-winning tallies top all skaters in the league. … Played for Team NOJHL at the Central Canada Cup Challenge.

LEFT WING: SPENCER MACLEAN, ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – First-year NOJHLer has averaged well over a point-per-game for expansion Wildcats picking up 66 points in 48 games. … His 29 goals lead Elliot Lake. … Is third on the team in scoring and tied for eighth in the NOJHL. … Knotted for fifth overall in man advantage markers with 10.

RIGHT WING: STEVE HARLAND, POWASSAN VOODOOS – Rookie forward has impressed all season for Powassan. … The 18-year-old right winger from Scarborough, Ont., leads all players in the NOJHL in offensive production with 92 points in 50 games. … Tops all skaters in assists with 50 and is tied for second in goals with 42. … Had an impressive 31-game point streak earlier this season. …Has only been held off the score sheet five times this season.

COACH: JORDAN SMITH, SOO THUNDERBIRDS — Has guided the Thunderbirds to a regular season title for a second straight campaign. … Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Smith’s record behind the bench for his hometown Sault Ste. Marie side has been stellar as his club has gone 85-12-2-7 in 106 games. … Served as head coach for Team NOJHL at the Central Canada Cup Challenge in Toronto.

MANAGER: KEVIN CAIN, SOO THUNDERBIRDS — Picks up first team all-star honours for a second straight season. … Architect of the top team in the NOJHL … Once again built a roster of home grown talent, players from the surrounding area and some key cogs from across Canada and the U.S. … Cain’s teams have won more games than any other in the league the past five seasons at 190. … Served as Director of Operations for Team NOJHL at the CCCC.

SMITH, ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – Was a key cog in the impressive record put together by the first-year Wildcats. … Ranks in the top five in each of the six main NOJHL goaltending statistical categories. … The 20-year-old from Southlake, Texas sits fifth in goals-against average (2.76), third in save percentage (.915), tied for first in shutouts (3), knotted for third in wins (19), second in minutes played (1,891:54) and fourth in saves (937).

CENTRE: BRADY CLOUTHIER, ABITIBI ESKIMOS – The veteran forward from Almonte, Ont., sits second in points and point-per-game average with 87 and 1.98 respectively. … Second among NOJHL skaters in assists with 48. … Fourth in the league in goals with 39. … Tied for fifth in power play markers with 10. … He has had point streaks of five games of more five times so far this season. … Played for Team NOJHL at the Central Canada Cup Challenge.
