Winter stops 40 as Gold Miners blank Wildcats

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – Ryan Winter turned aside all 40 shots he faced to post his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading third shutout of the season as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners blanked the Elliot Lake Wildcats 3-0 Saturday at Centennial Arena.

A first period power play helped Kirkland Lake notch the eventual game-winning goal 15:51 into the contest with Tyler Fyfe burying his 11th tally of the season with assists going to Marshal Nikitin and Calvin Chartrand.

The visitors then added to their cushion late in the middle stanza with Max Cavallini picking up his fifth of the campaign to put Kirkland Lake up by two after two.

Fyfe then scored again in the final frame to round of the night’s scoring at 13:17 with Nikitin dishing out his third assist of the night. Fyfe also helped set-up the Cavallini effort to join Nikitin with three points apiece.

Winter did the rest for his side to post the shutout.

Parker Simpson stopped 33 of 36 in defeat for Elliot Lake.
